2021-2022 Curriculum | Year at a Glance

August:

​

  • Math - Unit 1: Count & Graph (Creating Routines Using Data, organizing data into picture graphs, representing numbers using tens and ones, using a number line to count)

  • Language Arts - We will begin the year assessing each student's reading level using the Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). Small instructional reading groups will be formed based on the BAS results. We will introduce and practice our Daily 5 rotations (read to self, read to someone, work on writing, word work, and listen to reading)

  • Writing- We will be getting ready for writing and setting up Writer's Workshop

  • Social Studies - Our Earth Our Home (city, state, and country).

  • Health- Practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks. Advocate for personal, family, and community health. 


September:

​

  • Math - We will have our Unit 1 assessment (which we will study/review in class) at the beginning of this month. We will then start Unit 2: Geometry (This unit focuses on shapes and their attributes, compose two-dimensional shapes or three-dimensional shapes to create a composite shape and compose new shapes from the composite shape, partition circles/rectangles into two or four equal shares, and understand that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. Students will also recognize numbers to 120 and will organize/interpret picture graphs.) 

  • Reading - We are in full swing with guided reading groups and Daily 5 rotations. Our focus skills this month include identifying story elements (setting, main characters, problem/solution, etc...); identifying basic similarities and differences between two text; knowing and using various text features; determining the meaning of words in a text; asking and answering questions about the text to better understand what we are reading.

  • Grammar- We will learn common and proper nouns, and singular and plural nouns

  • Writing- We will learn learn about Narrative Writing

  • Science - Weather (Seasons, weather patters, temperature, rain/snow/sleet/windstorms/hailstorms, changes to the environment)

  • Health- Health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

October:

​

  • Math - Unit 2: We will complete unit two half way through October. We will then begin Unit 3: Measurement & Time (expressing the length of an object as a whole number of length units, non-standard measurement rules, tell/write time in hours/half hours and picture/bar graphs.)

  • Reading - Our focus skills this month include: using text features to answer questions about a text; using pictures and illustrations to help us understand information in a text; making connections between texts, individuals, events, or stories; distinguishing between information provided by pictures and information provided by text; comparing and contrasting characters in stories; identify who is telling the story at various points in a text

  • Grammar- We will learn singular and plural nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

  • Writing- We will continue learning Narrative Writing (Beginning, Middle, and End)

  • Science- Weather (Seasons, weather patters, temperature, rain/snow/sleet/windstorms/hailstorms, changes to the environment)

  • Social Studies American heroes: Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

  • Health- Access valid information and products and services to enhance health. 


November:

​

  • Math - We will continue Unit 3: Measurement & Time (expressing the length of an object as a whole number of length units, non-standard measurement rules, tell/write time in hours/half hours and picture/bar graphs.)

  • Reading - Our focus skills this month include:  Retell stories, including key details; identify different types of poems; identify reasons an author gives to support points in a text.

  • Writing- We will learn Informational and Explanatory Writing

  • Grammar- We will learn meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words,

  • Science- Light and Sound (Natural versus man-made sources of light, what causes a shadow and how it changes throughout the day. Differentiate between various sounds in terms of pitch, volume, loud and soft.)

  • Social StudiesAmerican heroes: Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence).


December:

​

  • Math - We will begin Unit 4: Addition and Subtraction (solving addition and subtraction word problems, applying properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract, unknown addend problems, add and subtract within 20, relate counting to addition and subtraction, understanding the meaning of the equal sign and determining if the addition/subtraction equations are true or false, determine the unknown whole number, determine whether a group of objects are odd or even numbers, and picture/bar graph.)

  • Reading - Our focus skills this month include: Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, and events; Identify who is telling the story at different points in a text; ask and answer questions about key details in a text

  • Writing- We will continue to learn information and explanatory writing

  • Grammar- We will learn about affixes, suffixes, and conjunctions

  • Science- Light and Sound (Natural versus man-made sources of light, what causes a shadow and how it changes throughout the day. Differentiate between various sounds in terms of pitch, volume, loud and soft.)


January

​

  • Math - We are continuing Unit 4: Addition and Subtraction (solving addition and subtraction word problems, applying properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract, unknown addend problems, add and subtract within 20, relate counting to addition and subtraction,   understanding the meaning of the equal sign and determining if the addition/subtraction equations are true or false, determine the unknown whole number, determine whether a group of objects are odd or even numbers, and picture/bar graph.)

  • Reading - Our focus skills this week include: Identify words or phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses; identify the main idea and details of a text; Ask and answer questions about key details in a text

  • Writing-We will begin learning about opinion writing

  • Grammar- We will learn commas, prepositions, and determiners

  • Social studies - American Heroes: Lewis & Clark, and Ruby Bridges.

  • Health- Goal setting, interpersonal communication skills, decision-making skills, and influence of family/peers/culture/media/technology.


February

​

  • Math - This month we will finish Unit Four and begin Unit Five: Place Value (Understand that two digits of a two-digit number represent amount of tens and ones, compare two two-digit numbers with symbols </>/=, add within 100 {adding a two-digit number and an one-digit number and adding a two digit number and a multiple of ten}, mentally find 10 more/10 less, subtract multiples of 10, fluently add and subtract within 20, and picture/bar graphs.)

  • Reading - Our skills this month focus on describe the connection between two individuals/events/ideas/pieces of information; using illustrations to get more information about what we are reading; ask and answer questions to better understand what we are reading; explain the major difference between texts that tell stories and text that give information.

  • Grammar- We will learn how to sort words into categories, pronouns, possessive pronouns, indefinite pronouns

  • Writing-Continue opinion writing, and learn narrative writing with the four "W's"

  • Science- Animals

  • Social Studies- American Hero: George Washington Carver and Civil Rights

March:

​

  • Math -  We will continue Unit Five: Place Value (Understand that two digits of a two-digit number represent amount of tens and ones, compare two two-digit numbers with symbols </>/=, add within 100 {adding a two-digit number and an one-digit number and adding a two digit number and a multiple of ten}, mentally find 10 more/10 less, subtract multiples of 10, fluently add and subtract within 20, and picture/bar graphs.)

  • Reading- Our skills this month focus on identifying words and phrases in stories or poems; comparing and contrasting characters adventures in stories; using pictures to gain more information about what we are reading; identifying the reasons an author gives to support points in a text

  • Writing- We will learn how to research writing

  • Grammar- We will learn determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words, future tense, contractions, and compound words

  • Science- Plants

  • Social Studies - American Hero: Theodore Roosevelt and National Parks

 

April:

​

  • Math - We will begin our final unit for the year, Unit 6: Continued Addition & Subtraction (solving word problems for addition with three whole numbers, fluently add and subtract within 20, and picture/bar graph)

  • Reading - Our skills this month will focus on identifying the main idea and retelling key details of a text; explain the major differences between books that give information, drawing on a wide reading range of text types; ask and answer questions about key details in a story.

  • Writing- We will review opinion, information, and narrative writing

  • Grammar- We will include a review of nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

  • Science- Magnets

  • Social Studies- American Hero: Theodore Roosevelt and National Parks.

  • Health - Friendship/conflict resolution

 

May (Themed Days)​

​

  • Math- We will review all the math concepts from the school year. We will also begin our Themed Days. 

  • Reading- We will begin learning reader's theater

  • Writing- We will review all writing

  • Grammar- We will learn pronouns, adverb, and complete sentences

  • Social Studies- Economics
